KATHMANDU, 5 August 2013 (IRIN) - Gaps in mental health care for men who have sex with men (MSM), a population disproportionately affected globally by HIV, are limiting effective treatment and care for both HIV and mental illness, experts say.

Risk-taking, innovation key to future humanitarian work

DAKAR, 6 August 2013 (IRIN) - Rapid change has always marked the humanitarian enterprise, but the pace of change feels like it has accelerated, partly driven by technological innovations which are beginning to transform response and are enabling new actors - from graphic designers to chaos scientists - to jump in and respond. To navigate this complex, dynamic environment, humanitarians must "take risks, collaborate, innovate, do better over-the-horizon-analysis and anticipation," said Allegra Baiocchi, head of the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in West Africa.

Refugee shelter for the future

JOHANNESBURG, 5 August 2013 (IRIN) - Tents have long played an essential role in the emergency phase of humanitarian responses to refugee influxes. They are relatively light and cheap, and they can be stockpiled, flown in and erected in a short timeframe. But as anyone who has slept in one can attest, tents also have major shortcomings - they provide minimal protection from climatic extremes, offer little space or comfort, and deteriorate quickly.
