Even after decades of progress toward the equality of women, almost 90% of countries continue to have laws or regulations that prevent women from fully participating in economic life as entrepreneurs or employees. Countries differ enormously on the influence that family background may have on children's achievements. Close to a million Syrians have crossed into Lebanon, where they make up 22% of the population — a number only expected to grow. How cash-strapped Lebanon can cope with the influx is the subject of high-level meetings this week and a new assessment report. World Bank Group President Jim Yong Kim announced a groundbreaking initiative to reach 300 of the largest cities in the developing world in the next four years to help them plan for a low-carbon future and get capital flowing so they can finance those plans.
