In 2012, about 6.6 million children died before their 5th birthday, down almost half from 1990. Health experts say most of the deaths are preventable, and more action is needed to provide health care for newborns, antibiotics, vaccines, better nutrition, and breastfeeding support. Why do some utilities perform well and others badly? A new study explores this question, with the goal of improving basic services for the poor. The study found that on average, private utilities outperform public utilities, and that regulatory and corporate governance are also important. In Central America, making tortillas over a smoky fire is a way of life. Typically, women spend nearly four hours a day preparing tortillas and other food for their families, routinely inhaling air pollutants from burning firewood. Every year, 37,000 premature deaths are caused by household air pollution. World Bank Group Fellows will spend a minimum of six months getting hands-on experience at World Bank headquarters in Washington, D.C. Fellows will work on economic policy, technical assistance to countries, and lending for eliminating poverty and increasing shared prosperity.
