Lena Dunham, Natasha Lyonne and Tavi Gevinson lip-sync for women's rights

There aren't many good reasons to record yourself lip-syncing to a song and then post it online. Vanity, self-preservation and the possibility of fame are not among them.
What is a good reason then, you ask? Bringing awareness to women's rights and encouraging others to get out and vote.
That's what a whole group of female celebrities have just done. Lena Dunham, Orange is the New Black's Natasha Lyonne and teenage fashion maven-turned-actress Tavi Gevinson are among the 65 lovely ladies lip-syncing to Lesley Gore's 1964 classic "You Don't Own Me" in a video recently released online.
If you can't tell from the lyrics, which include the line, "And don't tell me what to do/ Don't tell me what to say/And please, when I go out with you/ Don't put me on display," this video is all about women's rights, specifically the fight for female reproductive autonomy. The video even features an introduction and some closing remarks from Gore herself, who ends the video by saying, "It's hard for me to believe, but we're still fighting for the same things we were then [in 1964]. Yes, ladies, we've got to come together, get out there and vote and protect our bodies. They're ours."

The video was created by The Department of Peace, an organization advocating for a national movement of peace and nonviolence, as a way to encourage women to get out and vote on Nov. 4 since many of the issues at stake on Election Day have a direct effect on women's health.
Dunham and Lyonne have been particularly busy spreading the word about voting on Nov. 4. They both appeared in the Rock the Vote campaign's new video released earlier this month that also featured Lil Jon asking, "Turn Out for What?" Dunham also made a video for President Obama's 2012 campaign talking about her first time voting and later received flack for possibly not voting in that election. However, the claims turned out to be false. Hopefully, Dunham's voting won't come under scrutiny this Election Day.
