World Human Rights Day: Women’s safety duty of all, says LS speaker

Less than a week after a 27-year old MNC executive was raped by a Uber cab driver in Delhi, Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan and National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) chairman Justice K G Balakrishnan made references to “women’s security in the country” while speaking at a World Human Rights Day event organised by the NHRC in the city on Wednesday.
Emphasising the right to education of women and children and addressing the issue of honour killing, Mahajan said, “A lot needs to be done to make the society think about these issues and to bring about a change in their outlook. The protection and promotion of human rights and observation of Human Rights Day should not be the responsibility of NHRC or the government, but of all people. It will not be sufficient just to talk of human rights on one particular day. We have to become mutually sensitive towards each others’ rights at all times.”
Echoing her views, Justice Balakrishnan said NHRC had been focussing on the rights of vulnerable groups, particularly children, women and the disabled. He made references to women’s security, including “high incidents of women trafficking, gender gaps in school enrolment, misuse of diagnostic techniques resulting in skewed sex ratio and girl child marriage.”
