Local Indian Volunteer Wins the U.S. Presidential Service Award

CHENNAI: U.S. Consul General Jennifer McIntyre presented the U.S. Presidential Service Award to Chennai blogger, lawyer, freelance journalist, and UN volunteer Kirthi Jayakumar.  Ms. Jayakumar won the Gold, Silver, and Bronze awards for her work with Delta Women, an NGO.  Ms. Jayakumar worked as a blogging manager and a contributing writer during her volunteer service with Delta Women.
President Barack Obama, in a letter congratulating Ms. Jayakumar on winning the award, said, “Individuals, the private sector, and government must combine efforts to make real and lasting change so that each person has the opportunity to fulfill his or her potential.” 
The President’s Volunteer Service Award recognizes individuals, families, and groups that have achieved a certain number of hours of service over the course of a year or lifetime. Awards are given to individuals 15 and older who have completed 100 or more hours.
The President’s Volunteer Service Award program is a great way to thank and honor those who, by their demonstrated commitment and example, inspire others to engage in volunteer service.
Recognizing and honoring volunteers sets a standard for service, encourages a sustained commitment to civic participation, and inspires others to make service a central part of their lives.
