Migrants to Send $414 Billion Home in 2013 Groups Get Grants
for Accountability
Evaluating Afghanistan's Largest Development Program Livestock Data in Rural Africa: The Tanzanian Case Study
The developing world is expected to receive $414 billion in migrant remittances in 2013, an increase of 6.3% over last year. The top recipients are India — where remittances are larger than the earnings from IT exports — China, the Philippines, Mexico, Nigeria, and Egypt. 12 civil society organizations get $9 million to monitor government spending and provide citizen feedback. These are the first grants by the Global Partnership for Social Accountability, which supports civil society and governments working together to solve governance challenges in developing countries. Since its inauguration in 2003, the National Solidarity Program has established 32,000 Community Development Councils across Afghanistan and financed nearly 65,000 development projects. The World Bank released a randomized impact evaluation of the program. A close look at the livestock sector in a country like Tanzania can reveal many interesting facts about investment gaps, potential benefits, and overall social impact. Some of the findings of the Tanzania study are about gender differences in terms of livestock ownership and access to input and markets.
