Taylor Swift Says Lena Dunham Helped Her Understand Women’s Rights: "I've Been Taking a Feminist Stance

Whether writing inspiring lyrics for her fellow Swifties or hanging out with her A-list girlfriends (Kelly OsbourneSarah Hyland and Jaime King just to name a few), the talented singer is a true girls' girl.
But in a new interview with The Guardian, the "Shake It Off" singer credits Girls star Lena Dunham for educating her on the important topic of feminism.
"As a teenager, I didn't understand that saying you're a feminist is just saying that you hope women and men will have equal rights and equal opportunities," Swift admitted in the publication. "What it seemed to me, the way it was phrased in culture, society, was that you hate men."
She added, "Becoming friends with Lena -- without her preaching to me, but just seeing why she believes what she believes, why she says what she says, why she stands for what she stands for -- has made me realize that I've been taking a feminist stance without actually saying so."
Once Dunham read Swift's latest comments, she couldn't help but applaud her dear friend.
"She's been my feminist role model for a long time," Dunham Tweeted. "And I cannot f---ing wait for her VMA performance."
She added, "Taylor recognizes that at its core it's not about radicalism or rage, but equality. Her willingness to own the term means much to many...When someone grows, changes and shows their vulnerability and evolution publicly... That's a gift they give to us that we should honor."
Swift, who is scheduled to perform at Sunday's MTV Video Music Awards, just released her new single, "Shake It Off."
The single is inspired by the fact that people can talk about you and make up rumors all they want, and you can't control that. What you can control is your reaction to it. With that said, you can either let it get to you...or shake it off. (Cue the music!)
Fans can pre-buy her upcoming album, 1989, online now. They can also find it in stores on Oct. 27!
