More than 1 billion people still live in destitution. At the same time, inequality is rising in many developing nations. The World Bank wants to galvanize international support around two goals: to virtually end extreme poverty by 2030 and push for greater equity. Some of the easiest targets for lowering greenhouse gas emissions are in front of us every day: black carbon from diesel-fueled vehicles and solid fuel cooking fires, methane from solid waste, hydrofluorocarbons from aerosols. A new report identifies ways the World Bank can help reduce these "short-lived climate pollutants" — with immediate health benefits. Food prices have dropped 12% from their historic peak in August 2012, yet they remain high. And some countries are using ill-advised subsidies to try to lower costs for consumers. Replay a conversation with World Bank Senior Economist and Food Price Watch author José Cuesta as he discusses the impact of high food prices. The Pacific Islands are among the most vulnerable to climate change and natural hazards. These countries are already feeling the effects of climate change. Global efforts must be undertaken to avoid further warming and to provide support to Pacific Island countries so that they can continue to live on their islands.
